Kundiawa

Kundiawa, the capital of Simbu Province, is a very small and picturesque town, and an ideal place to stop en route to your mountain or river adventure.

Not far from Kundiawa are the Keu Caves that are ideal for caving expeditions. There are several other caves around the area but they are burial places for warriors killed in battle. The Nambaiyufa Amphitheatre is also nearby and has interesting rock paintings.

The terrain is extremely rugged in Simbu Province and many of the valleys are inaccessible. Some of the highest mountains in Papua New Guinea are in Simbu Province including Mt Wilhelm, at 4,509 metres, the highest peak in Papua New Guinea. If you want to make the climb to the summit there is a clearly marked track that passes through traditional Simbu villages, dense rainforest and into the valley before reaching Pindaunde Lakes where there are basic huts for overnight stays. The view from the summit is magnificent and on a clear day views stretch from the north to the south coast.

The Wahgi River is considered to be one of the best rafting experiences in the world and there are several tour operators who can arrange rafting trips for you. The river rushes through deep chasms, stretches of rapids, under small rope bridges and waterfalls. Quite an adrenalin rush!
