During the Second World War, Manus was occupied by the Japanese and later by American and Australian armed forces. Millions of dollars were spent by these forces to construct a huge base, airport and dock facilities at Seedler Harbour. Today Manus is a peaceful place ringed by small islets and a magnificent reef. The rusting remains of the base can still be seen nearby.

Byuang, a village in the centre of the island is a great place to see traditional dancing and if you want to take a canoe trip the Worei River offers the perfect opportunity.

The North coast of the island is bordered by a reef, and with an abundance of marine life and good visibility Manus Island is a brilliant location for diving and snorkelling.

Orca whales can sometimes be seen off the shores of Wuvulu Island between January and March, where turtles and dugongs can also be found.
