Popondetta
The capital of Oro Province, Popondetta, is located along a stretch of the Oro Bay Highway. The name Popondetta means ‘place of the Popondo tree’ and the town is currently seeing a large boom due to the Higaturu oil palm project.

There is actually little to do in Popondetta except a few sights including the village of Segeri, Higaturu’s company town, is surprisingly large with its own school, hospital and sports ground. Just out of town is a good swimming hole created by a WWII bomb. There are several WWII sites in the area and a local guide can show you around.
Mt Lamington is visible from Popondetta and the volcano occasionally shakes and smokes. Since the eruption in 1951 all has been quiet and if you are into walking you can still climb it. It is recommended to take a local guide for a small fee to avoid any confusion when met by landowners who sometimes charge you to walk on the mountain.
