Tabubil is located in Western Province and was mainly built to serve the OK Tedi mining community, and due to this it is similar to an Australian country town rather than a PNG village.

Tabubil is very much a company town with most amenities. The town is split into two areas - company housing area and the shanty area around the edges of town.

The surrounding area is a haven for bird life, with 16 species of birds of paradise in the vicinity. Lake Wangbin is a great walk but can be a little tough at times and you may be approached by locals who will ask you not swim in the lake, a sacred site to them. The Lukwi Caves are not far from Tabubil and are worth a look; a waterfall covers the entrance to a 150 metre tunnel which eventually opens out into a narrow gorge.
