Sepik

The Sepik River is the longest river in Papua New Guinea and there are many very interesting tribes living in villages along the river that are noted for their magnificent carvings and elaborate manhood initiation ceremonies.

flights to SepikThe Sepik originates in the Central Ranges between Papua (province of Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea, and flows 1,126 km to the sea. Like the Amazon River it is a serpentine river winding through the lowlands. The Sepik has a huge 77,700 km2 catchment but no real delta area, flowing into the sea in northern New Guinea, about 100 km east of the town of Wewak.

The scale of the river is impressive enough but along with the beautiful stilt villages and architecture, the bird life and spectacular sunsets it is an incredible place to be. Although you must be warned that the heat and humidity can be immense and along with the mosquitos it can get unbearable but you shouldn't let that put you off a memorable and exciting visit to the Sepik River.

Flights to Sepik with Air Niugini

flights to SepikA trip to the Sepik River should not be rushed and it is recommended to visit a few Sepik villages to really experience village life, activities and to get to know the villagers. There are several ways to travel on the river. You can travel on village canoes and be a passenger, you can buy a canoe and do it yourself which can be very tiresome, motorised canoes can be quicker but you will need to hire a guide too, or alternatively you can participate in a guided tour which have boats cruising the river.
