Wewak is the provincial capital of the East Sepik Province, and is a thriving, important commercial centre, separated from the Sepik Basin by the Prince Alexander mountain range.

Wewak is an attractive town which is a great stop off point for canoe trips along the Sepik River.  You may be surprised to find swaying palms and golden sandy beaches right next door to the main town.  Beautiful beaches stretch all along the coast.


You can enjoy a boat trip to a nearby island and you could well see some dolphins and porposies happily swimming in the bay.

The town itself was the scene of some bitter fighting during WWII.  Indeed bomb craters pockmark the area, and are still visible around the airport runway.  War relics are plentiful, unexploded bombs have been found, as have infantry equipment, mostly Japanese.
