Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province is now a major commercial centre that was previously a small outpost in the mid 1950's.

There are several parks around this area to visit. Given that Gokora is a small town you can easily walk around it, and in doing so visit all of the parks in the area.

The best of the Highlands shows, the Goroka Show, is held every year mid-September. It is a great chance to see many sing-sings and bands, as well as participating in numerous cultural activities.

Around Goroka you can find many coffee plantations and is the perfect opportunity to visit local villages and marketplaces nearby.

The Asaro village is situated north-west of Goroka and it is the home of the Asaro Mud Men.  It is aid that many years ago, the Asaro had a run in with a neighboroughing tribe and came off second best.  Someone in the Asaro village had an idea to get revenge and pay back.  The warriors covered themselves with grey mud and a huge mud mask before heading off to seek revenge.  They sneaked up on the unsuspecting tribe who were still celebrating their victory and frightened them.  The ghostly apparations emerged from the trees and the unsuspecting tribe believed it was their ancesters coming to tell them off for fighting te Asaro.  They quickly scattered and the Asaro were victorious.
