Mount Hagen

Mount Hagen is the provincial capital of the Western Highlands where the streets are surprisingly busy for a city in Papua New Guinea. It is a commercial centre where wealth from coffee and tea plantations has developed it into an unruly city with a Wild West feel. There are areas that should be avoided at any given time.

The Saturday market in Mount Hagen is the main focal point of the city and is one of the biggest and most interesting markets in the whole of Papua New Guinea. The items for sale can be just as colourful as the local clothing.

In August the Mt Hagen Show takes place and although not as big as the Goroka Show it is still worth a look for the colourful dress and cultural activities. If you miss the show there are many sing-sings frequently held around the province for you to experience.

Around Mt Hagen there are great walking and trekking opportunities. The Wahgi Valley is magnificent with lush greens, roaring rivers, rainforest and gardens. There are many different walks available depending on your time and ability. For the serious trekkers, the 4509 metre summit of Mt Wilhelm can be reached from Mt Hagen.
