Mount Wilhelm

Climbing to the summit of Mount Wilhelm is the highlight of everyone's trip to the Highlands. At 4,509m (14,793 ft) Mount Wilhelm is the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea. It is part of the Bismarck Range and its peak is the point where the provinces of Simbu, Western Highlands and Madang intersect. You can expect to pass many memorable scenic landmarks including waterfalls, forests, lakes and the remains of a World War II American bomber aircraft.

Mount Wilhelm is the most accessible mountain to climb in PNG and the best time to climb is between April and October. You will normally pass through Kundiawa on your way to Mount Wilhelm and is great place to stock up on supplies for your trek. Trans Niugini Tours based in Mt Hagen can organise the trek for you and provide guides, porters, food and equipment. Alternatively you can hire a guide and porter yourself.

If the weather is good you can make the climb in 3 days but more often than not it takes longer. The trek starts at Kegsugl and involves climbing up through rainforest and along Pindaunde valley to the Pindaunde Lakes. At Pindaunde there are a couple of huts owned by the National Parks Board.

The climb to the top is usually undertaken before dawn and can take 4-6 hours depending on fitness. Reaching the peak at dawn allows better chance of clear weather and magnificent views.
