Rabaul
Rabaul remains a desolate town in the East New Britain Province, guarded by its grumbling volcanoes since the eruption of Tuvurvur in 1994. Much of the town still remains buried in the volcanic ash and mud.

Despite the devastating past Rabaul has recovered numerous hotels and there is now a market and a few shops around the area but not a great deal of activities available. Diving and snorkelling in Simpson Harbour with many sunken ships and war relics, and the craggy islands called Beehives are worth exploring during your stay.
There are countless tunnels and caverns in the hillsides of Rabaul and tunnel tours are available with a local guide. If you enjoy walking and climbing Rabaul has many walking routes and you can climb all the volcanoes except Tuvurvur. Helicopter tours are also available over Tuvurvur and Vulcan to really appreciate their size.
